Dark Man Shadow "Victims of Negligence" Feedback

Ave Noctum (UK)
Symphonic Black Metal… And there you go, half of you reading this have just thought, “Oh, another load of Cradle Of Filth/Dimmu Borgir wannabes”. Fair point. It feels like in the last 10 years the term has been synonymous with those two bands and a polished, over-produced slickness.

But it wasn’t always like that.

In the late 90′s those bands were still in their relative infancy (compared to their output since) and there were many other bands that were lumped in to a similar style. Emperor were in there, but on the other hand, so were Moonspell. Many bands consequently chose to plough a different furrow and their experimental fledgeling Black-ish Metal roots (symphonic or not) were all but forgotten. Dark Man Shadow remind me of those kind of bands from around that time. Which makes sense really as Dark Man Shadow were formed in 1998…yet this is only their third full-length release. They are effectively a duo of Sorroth (guitar/vocals) and Samotha (keys/vocals) with the impressively solid drumming talents of Nocte Obducta’s Matze helping out.

The overall musical approach certainly leans more towards the Dark/Symphonic side of Melodic Black Metal. Vocally I quite like the approach that, given neither vocalist are particularly prolific singers, Sorroth goes from speaking, to a low growling shout to his favoured theatrical almost-singing-shout (not far from the style of Grave Digger’s Chris Boltendahl to be honest!) and Samotha is slightly operatic, low in the mix and generous on the reverb. They try and mix many styles though which gives the album that edgier feel that again was prevalent in the late 90′s. Dark Man Shadow have certainly got the hang of blending intricate, sometimes over-blown keyboards with driving drums and riffy guitar. ‘Betrayal of Trust’ is a fine example of this at it’s best. On the whole it reminds me of Lunaris or maybe Agathodaimon. These similarities crop up elsewhere on “Victim Of Negligence” amongst others – there’s a bit of mid-period Emperor in there, but as in the grandiose-but-maudlin female vocal dominated ‘Len Dopis (Just A Letter)’ there is actually considerably more Peccatum than Emperor. And as I name-checked two bands earlier, I might as well mention that ‘Dying In The Corner’ massively reminds me of Moonspell. There’s some early Old Man’s Child moments at times as well as strong touches of Catamenia. There is a really good mixture on here as well as an underlying sense that the band never just play it safe in the songwriting. However, just to bring the review full circle and mock how I started it, the closing track REALLY reminds me of Dimmu Borgir. Maybe they did it on purpose…

OK, long-time devotees of Symphonic Black Metal aren’t going to hear anything new on “Victim Of Negligence” and some may even recoil at the almost naïve qualities of some elements. But these are qualities that give a band identity and sometimes it’s just nice to hear something familiar and harking back to a different time, a less commercial style. There is plenty to keep your interest on “Victim Of Negligence” (each song has something that hooks you in – the blast beat with overlayed female vocal lines in ‘Slur’ for instance) and though certainly not ground-breaking (the blast beat with overlayed female vocal lines in ‘Slur’…), it’s really cool that there are still bands around just playing what they want, how they want, and just as cool that there are labels releasing it.

DARK MAN SHADOW might not sound like the most sexy band name you can come up with but once you get used to it, it isn’t that bad. It does kinda set the tone for what you can expect from them musically. This is black metal that is both symphonic and aggressive. The way I prefer my symphonic black metal. Listening to this is like being injected with pure energy straight into the veins. There is so much energy pouring out of this album that if that doesn’t get you heart pumping you are truly dead and should be buried in a shallow grave. This is the kind of black metal that will revive any old dried up heart. You might have heard this kind of black metal a number of times already but when it comes packaged like this I for one can’t resist it. This one I gotta buy.

DARK MAN SHADOW is a Black / Death Metal band from Germany that emerged on the scene back in 1998. The band plays brutal old school Death Metal music merged with Symphonic Black Metal music. They have a very strong European Black Metal sound that is very full and atmospheric. The band has a very dark and raw sound that is very unpolished, but not under produced. They have an old school European Death Metal feel that reminds me of some European bands coming out of Sweden in the mid '90's. They have a very involved sound that is both brutal and melodic. At times they have a bit of a technical Death Metal sound, but I think this is just from the Black Metal influences. The Black Metal ranges from dark and dreary, cod and harsh to melodic and atmospheric to mystical and symphonic. The combination of harsh deep male Death Metal vocals mixed with the melodic and angelic female vocals sometimes gives them a Gothic Metal type vibe. DARK MAN SHADOWS will draw in fans of old and new European Black Metal bands. If you were to take bands like OPTEP, LACUNA COIL, THE GATHERING & SINERGY and make them more Black Metal infused Death Metal then you would get a slight idea of what DARK MAN SHADOW is doing. Another cool German band thatdoes their scene proud!

ue Album heißt “Victims Of Negligence”.
2001 erschien endlich lang erwartete Debütalbum “Tears Of Hate” (Warner Chappell und Eknaton/SPV).

Explicitly Intense (USA)
Reviewing an eclectic and an extreme metal CD such as Dark Man Shadow’s “Victims Of Negligence” is a great challenge due to its musical and vocal uniqueness. Imagine the darkened and haunting synthesizer passages found within Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth’s musical compositions and mix that in with the downtuned heavy as hell death metal rhythms and rough yet clean male vocals accented by operatic female soprano-type singing makes for one fucking hell of a listen.

Surprisingly, the band only consists of two members, respectively: Sorroth (male vocals, guitars and bass) and Samotha (keyboards and female vocals). They did have a studio session drummer play all the drums and percussive parts on this eight tracker, which was great as they avoided using a drum machine, phewww!!! With just three people involved in the recording of “Victims Of Negligence”, they sound as if they were a six-piece unit, fucking outstanding, yes.

I love this release, but my only complaints here is that this album is aimed at limited yet unique audience of obscure extreme metal fans, which good be a blessing and a curse. This could hinder the band’s progress onto becoming known within the international metal circles. And, they’re a two piece band, so what they’ve created in the studio would be impossible to replicate live unless they’ve a full band, which would definitely to the band great justice in giving the band decent tours, at least around Europe.

Don’t get me wrong, this CD is a killer release and definitely stands the test of time within the halls of extreme metal as Dark Man Shadow do not sound like anyone. They’re onto doing their own thing and they’ve certainly succeeded that and als
o gained me as a fan, for one.

Dark Man Shadow is highly recommended for fans of death/black metal hybrids featuring vocals that are tastefully and aggressively emotional yet hauntingly mesmerizing to the ears.

DARK MAN SHADOW are from Germany and already exist since 1998. “Victims Of Negligence“ is their third cd. It is distributed via Schwarzdorn Production.

It is not easy to describe the music of DARK MAN SHADOW. Very symphonic, bombast bordering songs which include different musical genres. Complex sound sturctures which are located in the Gothic area mix with hard (Black) Metal guitar riffs which are interspersed now and then. It develops a very melodic musical mass which is dark and morbid. Jazzed up with diverse keyboard insertions is generated an eerily beautiful black atmosphere. The ideal soundtrack for an horror or vampire movie! The use of hard male vocals and opera-like female vocals reinforce and support this impression. Very technical played you can hear with each note that grown musicians were at work who know what they want musically. The hard doubleblast drumming which partially goes in the highspeed area, but is then again moderated, supports the hard aspect of the production. By the variable use of speed “Victims Of Negligence“ gets at no time boring or verbose. Who is into a Metal mix with a lot of female vocals can regardless grab! All the others should also check DARK MAN SHADOW. It's worth it by all means!!!!

Dark Man Shadow stehe
// Gut // Manuela Ausserhofer

Greek Rebels (Gr)
Οι Γερμανοί Dark Man Shadow επιστρέφουν από ένα μεγάλο διάστημα αποχής από τη μουσική, με τον τρίτο τους δίσκο, έπειτα από το “Tears Οf Hate” (2001) και “The Shore Οf Straying Souls” (2003).

Ano, album „Victims Of Negligence“ od německých DARK MAN SHADOWS je především o pocitovém vnímání.

Lords of Metal (NL)

Zpočátku mě strašil dosti undergroundový obal tohoto alba a absolutní neznámost jména kapely. Přitom Dark Man Shadow existují už patnáct let a mají na kontě dvě desky.

Už první skladba „Repayment for Committed Injustice“ obsahuje vše, o čem DMS jsou. Z každého rohu (i když pořád v přijatelné míře) na vás vyskakuje Cradle of Filth. Avšak v hodně umírněné poloze. Prostě té gotiky je tu více. Přitom kapela sama sebe škatulkuje jako „harsh black metal“. To přátelé ani náhodou!

On se výrazově blíží Thebonovy (ex-Keep of kalessin), ona se prezentuje slušným operním přednesem.

Velice dobré melodické nápady a gotická atmosféra s příměsí symfonična. „Victims Of Negligence“ má v sobě přitažlivost. A tohle tahle nahrávka zcela splňuje.

Metal Mouth
Victims Of Negligence is their third full length release, a release that starts with a haunting spoken word passage entwined with a soaring operatic vocal, then down comes the axe. The vocals are powerful, cutting and dark. Repayment For Committed Injustice is my introduction to this band – and, well – what an introduction. Can I have my face back? They’ve just melted it. Each vocal harmony becomes lifted with an undercurrent of synth leads that act as a catalyst for this album to flow.Len Dopis (Just A Letter) begins with another haunting spoken word section – it feels like elves singing to each other in a forest in the dead of night, sombre, but with just enough joy to make it not depressing. I’m thankful this album came to me in the autumn, as black metal is only truly appreciated with cold dark nights and snow fall imminent. This track doesn’t feature blistering male vocals but instead benefits from a softer operatic approach. The guitars still shred and the drums still blast but the music becomes an ethereal presence that I find deeply fascinating.Seven Seasons takes the symphonic approach to heart, both vocals form a light and dark duet; the innocent meets the evil and together they form something perfectly hideous, but it’s grotesquely huge and reminds me of the vocal harmonies that come on the track Gateways from Norwegian symphonic black metallers Dimmu Borgir - the power delivered between Shagrath and Agnete Kjølsrud are brought forth with the same magnitude.

This band has been around for a while and presents us an impressive history: from 1998 till 2004 and later from 2008 till now they have been active. This album ‘Victims Of Negligence’ was already recorded in 2011 at the Empire Studios with Rolf Munkes, but it happens to be timeless atmospheric music with proper heaviness. Dark symphonic layers are combined with the archaic raucousness of black metal in a meritorious manner. In the lyrics, Dark Man Shadow digs deeper into the deceitfulness and falseness of human beings, which results in simply lacerating each other. This is no optimistic vision at all, but unfortunately it is the cruel reality in many places on this damned planet.

This brainchild of Sorroth (v,g,b) and Samoth (k,v) came into being in the late nineties and the kind of gothic/doom they are playing today, still seems to come from that era: beauty and the beast vocals, loads of symphonic arrangements, yet also an extreme foundation in their music. The occult atmosphere and Sorroth’s half-hoarse vocals more than once remind us of Johan Edlund (Tiamat) at the time of ‘Wild Honey’. In despite of a raucous approach, it all remains accessible and melodic. Those who feel nostalgia for this era, when extreme metal started to get relished with ravishing melodies, will have a proper addition to their collection with ‘Victims Of Negligence’. With drummer Matze of Nocte Obducta for the excellent ponderous drum skills. It is hard to find out who did the female vocals, I guess Adriana.

Grim atmosphere, beautiful soaring female vocals and entwined Symphonic Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal elements; such is the sound of
DARK MAN SHADOW, a German band (currently trio) that has been around for quite a while yet it seems like it's somewhat unheard-of and underground. "Victims of Negligence" comes after 10 years to follow up their last release, making it their 3rd full-length album. It's set to be released this November 15th.

The perfect blend of female vocals within such a genre of Metal doesn't seem so easy to achieve for everyone. However
, DARK MAN SHADOW managed to do this in the best way possible. Samotha's singing ranges from softened clean vocals to the pseudo-operatic chanting, showcasing a decent amount of talent and versatility and contrasting Sorroth's harsh vocals. Their mixture only contributes to the gloominess of the atmosphere within the album.

Songwriting-wise, the album is not short of enjoyable haunting moments and alluring melodies. It's actually devoid of any useless cacophony that shouldn't be there. With a not-so-polished production, the album sounds quite rough and raw that actually fits the style of the band, because an over-produced sound wouldn't do.

Overall, I think it's a must check for those seeking a nice combination of Symphonic Black Metal with a dark female voice.
DARK MAN SHADOW are good at what they do.

Album number three – and first in ten years – and Germany’s Dark Man Shadow are as dramatic and grandiloquent as ever they were. Symphonic, haunting, melodic, the instrumentation is well-balanced and the dual vocals are utilised well. Sorroth’s more aggressive approach gives the album its darker, belligerent side, whereas Samotha’s operatic style is haunting and embellishes the grandiose and romantic aspects. In terms of production, there’s a gloss to the album that enhances its melancholic and the mysterious elements. With a clear sense of dynamics, structure, and arrangement, the tracks are as complex as they are multi-layered and intricately detailed and emotive. Of the tracks, ‘Slur’ and ‘Majestic Uprising’ stand out as the most powerful, both of which balance the gothic and the romantic with the dramatic and the stirring. Victims of Negligence may not be delivering anything new to us but it’s an ambitious and impassioned piece of work.

Beide Daumen hoch für „Victims of Negligence“!

The Beauty meets the Beast“ beschreiben.

Navíc působí celkem neoposlouchaně, a když bych měl vybrat nějaký jasně zapamatovatelný nebo vyčnívající aspekt "Victims of Negligence", bude to asi právě Sorrothův vokál.
