Wow! Still familiar faces, he-he! At least Spanish XERION has recorded its 2nd full-length album, which I listen with hellish pleasure and freezing mind. Previous releases were pretty good too, but as for me,
this one is much better! The music is black metal, based on Galician mythology and folklore, which greatly put in their music. And really, interesting folklore sounds with beautiful and at the same time gloomy attitude crossing with raw and raging black metal passages and obscure vocals. I like how they mixed heavy guitars and keyboards, which looks very nice together. Folklore motives forcing your mind throw off any thoughts and just enjoy by music, and then black metal part forcing you to headbang, he-he! Wait for both Epic and majestic feelings, various tempos and glorious atmosphere; fast, slow and mid thresholds and just very impressive music. 8 own tracks + good TAUNUSHEIM cover and video bonus. Support them!

Texte verfasst. Musikalisch schweifen meine Gedanken beim ersten Track
jedoch erst einmal ins portugiesische Nachbarland, erinnern mich Xerión hier
doch an alte Moonspell zu ihren „Wolfheart“-Zeiten, was ihnen recht gut
was Schnelles“. Da diese Tempowechsel teils recht abrupt passieren, leidet
der ganze Song darunter. Schade.
Fazit:
Eine Black-Folk-Metal-Band, die man im Auge behalten kann.

Xerion's second
full length album entitled "Cantares Das Loitas Esquecidas" (Songs from
Forgotten Battles) is a great piece of music. This Celtic Black Metal band from
Spain has managed to mix melodic guitars, heavy drums, and growly harsh vocals
into a mass of atmospheric dark ambiance. Everything is great on this album. It
is deep, full, and complex. The vocals take the forefront on many of the
songs, giving each one its evil dark feel. They are harsh, growling, and vile.
The guitars provide the majority of the melodies, while also, at times, being
heavy, fast, and deep. Drums are quick and provide excellent tempo throughout
the entire album. The uilleann pipe (national bagpipe of Ireland), flute, and
whistles are utilized throughout the album as well. These instruments provide
the Celtic feel and are incorporated nicely into the heavy mix of guitar and
drums. As a whole, the instruments blend well and give this album an excellent
dark Celtic sound. Furthermore, each song is diverse enough so that the whole
album keeps your interest. Overall, this is an excellent melodic heavy mix of
musicianship and is highly recommended. (4/5)

Revisando “Nocturnal Misantropía” no
notablemente busca nuevas expresiones musicales.
visual y sonora “Morte Na Iauga”.
comparativas. 8 / 10 points

It's been now 10 years since
the beginning of this band. Back in 2001, Nocturno decided to create a one-man
band with the name Xerión, inspired by the Celtic mythology of his homeland, Galicia (northwestern Spain). With the
passing of years many new members joined or left Xerión and the band released
several demos and split albums. In 2007 they released their first full length
“Nocturnal
Misantropia” after signing to
their new label Schwarzdorn Production. In the second half of 2010 they released
their second album “Cantares das
Loitas Esquecidas” again with
Schwarzdorn.
All these years Xerión were playing black metal,
sometimes with a more raw approach and other times with pagan folk mood. Their
new album, which translates to “Songs of Forgotten Battles” is by far their most complete and mature effort
and definitely their most professionally produced work. They play pagan black
metal with some folk elements and a few symphonic influences. They have found a
good balance between power and melody and the album avoids repetition. Their
sound is interesting, with guitars being the most dominant instrument, while all
others are accompanying the leading riffs. Some songs are aggressive and fast,
others follow slower and more atmospheric forms, while there are even some
acoustic, folk and ambient passages. Their screaming black metal vocals aren't
too extreme and there are also a few choir parts in some refrains. Lyrics are in
their native Galician language dealing with local history, mythology and
folklore. The album is about 47 minutes and it also contains a Taunusheim cover
of the song “Loitas na
Néboa”.
Overall “Cantares das Loitas Esquecidas” is a
good album and I believe that through all these years Xerión managed to built a
very interesting pagan sound. I just get the feeling that the compositions can
be improved. There are some good ideas in the songs, but still something is
missing to complete them and get them in a higher level! Anyway, I think they
are much improved compared to their previous efforts and I hope they will
continue this way in the future. 'Till then, I suggest all pagan metal fans to
check this band, since they deserve it.

Was
Songtitel wie ,Death In Water’ (im Original ,Morta Na Iauga’) oder ,Our Rotten
Souls` (Lateinisches Original: ,Putrefacta Aninma Nostra’) unterstreichen.
Wald ohne Menschen - naja..

Spanish
pagan black metal that tries hard [and succeeds] to break free of the monotonous
shackles the genre has been afforded by the likes of Nomans Land, Ordroerir,
Thrudvangar, etc. These aforementioned bands are more Pagan/ Folk in texture
than Xerion, and yet the quality of the music here is quite jaw dropping.
Hailing from Spain and not playing grinding death metal or terrible black metal
is a welcome change. This is a highly entertaining and competent band with some
great songs to evoke the mail clad raiders of the north. Like a Gothenburg
deathly clarity meets Dissection compositional complexity blasted through a
melodic pagan aligned atmosphere. This is a guitar heavy album with a heavy
leaning towards the old riff and solo melee of Dark Tranquillity, In Flames,
Nocturnal Winds, Sarcasm and the aforementioned Dissection. So we have a pretty
Swedish sounding band here and yet there is that Finnish epicness weaved
throughout the music’s core. From the rousing opener, The Awakening of Xerion,
[which is reminiscent of Moonsorrow at their best] to the slow brooding, Where
Victory Awaits, the song-craft will enchant the ears. I am extremely impressed
with the way the music unfolds and again the mighty Moonsorrow appear though the
clarity of the production. The riffs are addictive, the choral vocals embrace
the harsh snarls and are balanced to perfection. The band also cover Taunusheims
"Nebelkämpfe", a strange choice but one that compliments the album well. The
flute adds a true pagan folk flavour and leads you to the final track, Putrid
soul of ours, and what a way to end an album. You will be swept off your feet by
pure Xerion in full attack mode. Fast snares, wild riffing and a catchy
arrangement [like all this album is full of] drives the song to its
conclusion.
Metalbite Magazine (U.S.A.)
Spain is a small enough of a country but from where I have been enlightened by
some massive sounding metal that is pulsing out of this place. Fuelled by hatred
and darkness, Xerion have come for souls... no matter who’s souls it
is.
Driven by one lone person, with help of his veiled friends, has
created an interesting album for himself. Mixing this odd paring of old school
Black Metal like early Bathory with some symphonic elements of many of
today’s darkened metal Xerion rifles out some intense music without any
frills. Dark and morose with the satanic might, this project is not for the
faint-of-heart.
Devilish vocals mixing with pretty straight ahead riffing
create some strong melodies that tend to stick in your head. Add in the more
operatic touches as well, and there is this strong piece of music looming out of
the mire of today’s BM scene. It is pretty simple, basic and heavy... each note
bend on banishing the light from an unsuspecting earth.
Despite being
sung in Galician language the album still conveys the darkness that looms
inside. A sign of a good band, trying to break out of their own country.
Xerion have done that admirably. With a bit of luck, and a continuing
march to get better this band could do it real fast, because as it is- it is
good already, trying English will broaden their fan
base.

Fans an neuen mitreißenden Kompositionen laben.
bereits begonnen stilistischen Faden hierbei munter weiter: Sämtliche bisherigen
musikalischen Vorzüge wurden für „Cantares Das Loitas Esquecidas“
(programmatischer Untertitel: „Songs From Forgotten Battles“) weiter kultiviert.
kreischenden Huldigungsorgien an uralte kriegerische Historie voll rein, was auf

klanglich richtig schreckliche Gefilde abzudriften. Doch ehe man dazu verleitet
Band positiven Sinne. Natürlich macht diese Feststellung "Cantares Das Loitas
Esquecidas" nicht automatisch zu einer Scheibe, die kein Gehör verdient hat;

I didn’t know what to expect from this promo CD.
In one hand the Spanish-like title and on the other the folk cover with the
Black-ish logo. And the Press release didn’t help me much, since the only thing
that it was talking about was the line-up changes and the releases of XERIÓN.
To cut a
long story short, with too many demo and split releases alongside many lineup
changes in order to write them all down, XERIÓN
from Galicia,
Spain came to life in 2001 as Nocturno’s one man project. During those years they
have released a half of a dozen splits and four demos, as a full band and as a
one man project. Daga is the only member in Nocturno’s side, that is in the band as a full or a
session member from 2002 and forth. In 2007 they released their debut “Nocturnal Misantropia” and now, three years later,
they are here with their second full length album.
“Badaladas Funerais No Esmorecer Da
Lua” is only an intro and it gives you an idea of what to come. The
sounds of bells, thunder, rain and the chants don’t give you any other choice
rather than to think that you are dealing with an album with folk elements, at
least this is what I thought. The first minute of “O
Espertar Do Xerión” is putting you smoothly to the album, since it starts
with a nice bass line, then some simple guitar accords and then the drums. The
Gaelic dialect that the lyrics spoken do sound awkward at first but after a
while you realize that it is not that bad after all. The folk instruments from
O Rei Celta No Exilio gives the music a Celtic
touch which is a great, let’s us say, intermission between the up tempo rhythms
and the growls from Nocturno. Some of the riffing
sticks in your mind, like in “Onde A Victoria
Agarda” or “Morte Na Iauga”. The Celtic
part of the album is mostly seeing in compositions like the self titled “Cantares Das Loitas Esquecidas” with the melody from
the acoustic guitar at the start and the chants and “Loitas Na Néboa” with the bagpipes and bodhran you can
listen to. In this album XERIÓN manage
to nicely combine Black Metal with their tradition. The music is not something
new, but the Galician language does make a difference. This album will
definitely make the fans of folk/Black Metal satisfied.

dunklen Atmosphäre sehr gut an.
kennt). Schöne stimmungsvolle Scheibe, in die jeder Schwarzmetaller mal rein
hören sollte.

Having pushed out a silly amount of split EPs, including four in the
year 2005, then in 2007 a full length album, a demo and two splits they seem to
have quietened down on the release front since then. They put out one EP last
year and now release their second full length – it’s a wonder where some bands
get so many ideas for material! What I’m hearing of these Spaniards is nothing
groundbreaking, but it’s not the work of a tired old band that’s run out of
ideas before their career has taken off either. The album comes in with some
hymnal chanting over a subtle backdrop of thunder and rain sounding truly like a
lament to the fallen warriors, before ‘O Espertar Do Xerion’ works its way in
slowly with a rather nice bass-driven melody that soon takes hold with the
guitars and drums joining in and thrashing away furiously to a harsh battle
swagger. There are
some decent tempo changes throughout with atmospheric swathes splitting up the
fury, on ‘A Alquimica Dexeneracion Da Ialma’ which initially rides in with angry
and relentless intent this slows down do a sluggish pace as the guitar drags and
writhes languidly in the mix, the vocals sounding rather vile. ‘Onde A Victoria
Agarda’ breaks in with a hell of a groove and has a rather serious tone to it.
There’s a lovely soaring vocal line on this track that sounds rich and sonorous
especially as it contrasts against the harsh rasps of the main vocals while the
music hammers away with intent. There’s something about ‘Nas Verdes Fragas De Amh-Ghad-Ari’ that
reminds of Kampfar with its clattering assault although in places this turns out
to be rather gentle and folky with some beguiling flute melodies. ‘Morte Na
Lauga’ is one I do particularly like with its thick, richly textured bassline
that plods along at a steady pace. On the whole I found this to have some
appealing melodies and elements that make the album an enjoyable listening
experience, although that said I don’t find it particularly memorable.

Gerade bei 'A Alquímica
'Onde A Victoria

“Cantares Das Loitas Esquecidas” suena realmente masivo, poderoso y crudo. Algo

andere Black Metal- Bands, neu erfinden möchten.
Der Song A Alquimica
nochmal ans Herz legen!
