Brutalism (NL)
Labelled as Norwegian death/thrash, the death element is much more
prevalent, I guess as the album title suggests. The delivery is powerful, the
guitar sound almost as down tuned as the pure Boss HM2 sound, the energy the
filth of the vocals do make this more into the realms of old school death metal
for me, a change from the (what is considered) normal for this beautiful
country. The opener ‘Bleed Them Dry’ personifies my earlier remarks, although
critically I find the drums lose their path when the tempo increases on this
tune, but it won’t matter, you will still enjoy this. ‘Reign’ is a death metal
juggernaut the opening riff is simply a classic, even adding some melody to it.
Slowing intro the track itself, this reminds me very much of Morbid Angel and
Obituary, a definite step forward (especially the much deeper production) from
their debut album with a varied tempo and a precise metallic assault with a
level of sheer class. You can hear some Norwegian style here too, there’s a few
of those augmented chords in general and a sinister vocal delivery in places, a
well-rounded song all in all. Having said that, the barrage of ‘Withering
Flesh’ takes you thoroughly back to Scandinavia and the infant years of developing
death metal. For a fist full of leather and spikes, the sucker punch ‘Beat ‘Em
Down’ will suffice, oh yes indeed. Fast, furious, energetic, this blows away
the cobwebs and the art of Repulsive Aggression and its much lesser peers are
taken to school kicking screaming and wishing they had recorded something as
good as this. Repulsive Aggression have nailed their art, this
second release is a massive leap forward in both song writing and their
production values. The album is filthy, dark, heavy, all the necessary evils
and the songs themselves include so many influences, well, you are like a kid
in a really wicked sweet shop buried under a dust cloud of classic death metal
as the album title suggests but as ‘Anthropoclast’ reveals, backed with an undercurrent
of heavy thrash.

“Hypothermia” and “Withering Flesh” chronicle the frailty of human existence
and the joys of wanton violence and destruction. Mixing the bleak, nihilistic

My Revelations
Nicht ganz zwei Jahre ist es her, als Repulsive Aggression das
erste mal mit ihrer LP "Conflagration" nicht nur bei uns für gute
Kritiken sorgte. Mit dem Nachfolger "Preachers of Death" bestätigt
die Band nun, dass die erste Scheibe kein Zufallsprodukt war, denn auch der
neue Silberling überzeugt mich. Okay, vielleicht ein wenig mit Abstrichen, denn
das Songmaterial ist nicht immer gleich stark, aber auf die Gesamtlänge mit
etwa 40 Minuten bleibt der positive Eindruck bestehen. Vor allem die
Abwechslung überzeugt mich, es handelt sich zwar hier um eine astreine Death
Platte nach schwedischem Vorbild, was uns auch das Cover sofort verrät, aber
gerade durch das Schlagzeug kommen auch immer wieder Thrash Metal Züge ins
Spiel. Die Schlagzeug-Arbeit gefällt mir übrigens ausgesprochen gut und hebt
die Musik meiner Meinung nach auf den nächsten Level. Weil es sich eben nicht
nur um blindes Geknüppel handelt, sondern mit vielen Ideen aufwartet. Songs wie
"Reign" und "Lord of Men", die zu meinen Favoriten gehören,
sind 1A Nackenbrecher, die auch mit Riffs überzeugen, die sich im Gehörgang
festzecken. Als weiterer Anspieltipp ist sicher noch "Preachers of
Death" zu nennen, der den Abschluss der LP bildet und dem Hörer zum Ende
noch einmal schön in die Fresse haut. Fazit: "Preachers of Death" ist
eine gute LP, die man auf alle Fälle mal antesten sollte.

“Preachers Of Death” ist das zweite Album
dieser Norweger um Gitarrist E. Sæther, der sonst bei den Black-Metallern
Svarttjern zockt. Wie schon beim reichlich verzichtbaren Debütalbum gibt es
fummeligen Death Metal mit thrashigen Anleihen, der allerdings keinen
Wiedererkennungswert hat und orientierungslos wirkt. Mal geht man technischer
zu Werke und übt sich in nicht nachvollziehbaren Breaks, mal lässt man
melodische Passagen einfließen, die aber eher deplatziert wirken, dann wieder
hackt man stumpf drauflos. Markante Riffs oder gar Hooks sind genauso
Mangelware wie erkennbare Strukturen innerhalb der Songs. Dazu nervt der
eintönige, heiser krächzende Gesang, die sterile Produktion ist leblos. Oder um
es kurz zu machen: Braucht kein Mensch.

Seit einigen Jahren geht wieder viel in
Norwegen – nicht nur beim Black Metal, sondern vor allem im Death und Thrash
(und bei allem, was sich dazwischen bewegt): Obliteration, Nekromantheon, oder
auch Jungspunde wie Inculter und Sepulcher prügeln sich auf höchstem Niveau
durch das Reich der Toten – genauso auch Repulsive Aggression. Das zweite Album
des Trios aus Oslo ist ein echter Death-Thrash-Leckerbissen mit eindeutiger
Schlagseite in Richtung Todesstahl. PREACHERS OF DEATH ist abwechslungsreich.
Mal walzt es, mal groovt es, mal thrasht es und mal wird es herrlich düster.
Die Old School-Sause wird punktuell mit modernen Passagen, interessanten Breaks
und innovativen Beats untermalt, ohne dabei experimentell zu wirken. Der Sound
ist traditionell-knarzig bis leicht dreckig, aber trotzdem fett. Besonders
hervorzuheben sind die ersten drei Songs ‘Bleed Them Dry’, ‘Patricide’ und
‘Utter Repulsion’. Die Jungs verstehen ihr Handwerk definitiv. Trotzdem hätte
das Album gut und gerne ein bis zwei Songs kürzer sein können.

into existence in 2008, Oslo’s Repulsive Aggression have hardly been prolific
with this being only their second full length release (alongside their initial
3 track demo), but looking at the CVs of the members (including time with
Svarttjern, Bloodspawn, and Frail Grounds) that’s understandable. The old
school artwork led me into thinking this was going to be a straight forward,
rip your face off, old school death metal offering, and while I could
definitely hear elements of bands such as Autopsy, that definitely does not
tell the whole story. Things kick off with “Bleed Them Dry” which begins as no
frills death metal, but as the track progresses the sound refines and nods
towards the classic Gothenburg sound bringing to mind bands such as Entombed.
“Patricide” hammers into the listener’s skull next with a much thrashier edge
to the death metal sound, before “Utter Repulsion” takes things down a more
blackened thrash path. “Reign” and “Lord of Men” blast by with more melodic,
dare I say even groovier, elements coming to the fore. “Beat em Down” is more
aggressive and will likely go down a storm in the pits when unleashed live. The
tracks fly by without letting up in intensity or momentum, and after just under
38 minutes (for ten tracks), the album is finishing and the closing bars of the
eponymous “Preachers of Death” juggernaut ring out. Let’s be clear, although
there are elements of thrash, and blackened thrash, and melodeath and many
other subgenres represented, this is ultimately a gnarly, heavyweight death
metal bruiser, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the opportunity
to catch them live (Inferno please, hint hint!!)

Oldschool As Fvck – das ist der erste Gedanke, der sich beim Cover von
„Preachers Of Death” einstellt. Dazu passt auch der O.A.F.-Bandname REPULSIVE
AGGRESSION wie das Kettenhemd zum Mittelalter-Fan. Der Opener „Bleed Them Dry”
geht dann wie erwartet in die klassisch skandinavische Ausrichtung von Death
Metal – GRAVE und ENTOMBED lassen grüßen. Ab dann wird es aber erst
interessant, da biegen die Norweger nämlich Richtung Black und Thrash Metal ab.
Das kann dann sogar fast progressiv wirken („Reign“), was natürlich nicht Oldschool
und schon gar nicht As Fvck ist. Aber gerade das macht „Preachers Of Death“ zu
einem erstaunlich abwechslungsreichen Hörerlebnis. Klar, am Anfang wirkt das
Album auch durch die vielen Stil- und Tempowechsel recht sperrig, mit der Zeit
aber wirkt die zunächst krude Mischung dann überraschend gut. Zwar ist
auch einiges an Füllmaterial dabei, dafür gehen Kracher wie „Reign“, „Lord Of
Men“, „Beat ’Em Down“ und der High-Speed-Titeltrack zum Abschluss richtig gut
ins Ohr. So macht
die „Dark Side Of Norway“ richtig Spass.

Da Svarttjern- und Bloodspawn-Gitarrist
Saether offenbar in seiner Osloer Heimat ein wenig langweilig wurde, musste
noch ein Side Project her und das hat gefälligst so böse zu sein, dass das
Albumcover nur schwarzweiß ist. Aber mal im Ernst, obwohl die Herren mit ihren anderen Acts überwiegend
im Black Metal aktiv waren, ist auch das zweite Album von REPULSIVE AGGRESSION
erstaunlich Genre-fern und poltert in düsterster Death Wildnis, die auf einem
soliden Thrashbein der alten Schule steht. Neuartig oder überraschend genial
ist es auch diesmal nicht, dafür steckt es aber in so tiefst dreckigen
Untergrundschuhen, dass man nach Durchlauf der Scheibe garantiert meine Zähne
mehr in der Futterluke hat. Hier wird gekeift, gepoltert und mit Drums
aufgelaufen, deren Dominanz sich am Rande des Erträglichen bewegen, aber wer es
verrotzt und fies liebt, ist hier an der richtigen Stelle. Auch wenn die zehn
Songs nur wenige Unterscheidungsmerkmale aufweisen und das Album vermutlich
einzig und allein einem Zweck dient: Der puren Zerstörung und Huldigung der
rauen Death Ursprünge. Und die Mission, so simpel sie auch sein mag, ist
zumindest gelungen. Wer es anno 2015 anspruchsvoller und abwechslungsreicher
mag, fährt mit “Old School auf neu gemacht”-Akrobaten wie Tribulation dann aber

Voices From The Darkside
New bands are always welcome in the extreme Metal scene, especially those with
a cover artwork like the one REPULSIVE AGGRESSION from Oslo used for their
second album “Preachers Of Death”. Eye-catching black/white pictures with
details as well as some clichés are my kind of art for a record jacket. So I
put some hopes in this album from Norway. And they weren't disappointed.
REPULSIVE AGGRESSION are hard to file under one classic Metal genre. You'll
find elements of classic Death Metal, mixed with Black Thrash and classic
Thrash Metal, spiced with melodies from classic Metal and Gothenburg Death
Metal. This mix is pretty vitalizing and a real joy to listen to, even though
it took me some time to find access to the songs on “Preachers Of Death”. But
in the long run, songs like the rude opening 'Bleed Them Dry', 'Utter
Repulsion' with its pretty dark atmosphere and the nearly post Black Metal breaks
or the melodic double strike of 'Reign' and 'Lord Of Men' have become little
ear worms for me. And these tunes are not short of surprises. Just listen to
the classic Metal inspired break in 'Reign' and you'll understand what I'm
talking about. And that's not all... 'Beat 'Em Down' and 'Anthropoclast', for
example, are tunes WITCHERY would have been proud of. The final, eponymous high
speed stunner 'Preachers Of Death' ends up an album that is worth to get
blasted through my speakers again! So, let's do it!

Beim Gedanken an Death Metal aus Norwegen kommen mir
einfach immer noch Blood Red Throne in den Sinn. Und, na klar, in Kolbotn
gedeiht Death Metal jüngst auch ganz prächtig. REPULSIVE AGGRESSION bleiben im
Gegensazu zu Vorgenannten aber ganz unspezifisch. Im Gegensatz zu ihrem Debüt
„Conflagration“ kommen die vordringlichen Thrash-Einflüsse erst am Schluss
raus. Dennoch genügt das Bemühen um mehr Death-Metal-Purismus auf „Preachers Of
Death“ nicht, um sich dem Kern der Materie wahrhaft zu nähern. Selbst
wohlmeinend repetitiv Genanntes bleibt einfach eintönig und entfaltet wie der
Rest keinen zwingenden Sog. Einzig ´Reign´ ist doll düster mit schön schräg
anmutenden Taktwechseln. Die teils charmanten Riffs und Leads nutzen sich meist
schnell ab. So ist REPULSIVE AGGRESSION eben doch die Death-Metal-Band im
Portfolio des Svarttjern-Gitarristen.
